Question

Why do alfalfa cubes smell off-putting after I’ve soaked them?

Answer

Alfalfa cubes can give off a distinct smell, which some may find offensive or off-putting, and this may be especially true when using hot water to soak cubes during the winter. In addition, if cubes are soaked for long periods in hot and humid conditions, they may begin to ferment in the bucket and emit an unusual odor.

Depending on the amount of cubes you are soaking at one time, you may be able to reduce the soaking time significantly, as once cubes become soft, there is no advantage in protracted soaking. Strive to soak cubes just long enough to reach the desired texture and moistness.

Healthy horses with normal teeth do not necessarily need to have soaked cubes, unless they bolt their feed; in these instances, soaking can help increase the time it takes them to finish the meal.
